Colors! 3D dev diary – Paint with Friends

My wife and I recently had the first full-fledged collaborative painting session. Using our two dev-kits, I shared a painting session that she connected to, and we painted together on a single canvas.

While I spent a lot of time just testing collaborative paining to make sure everything functioned correctly, I haven’t really been able to really just play with the feature until now. It might not have been pretty (I can’t really paint, if you didn’t know), but it was definitely fun. We fought over canvas space, painted things behind layers for the other to find and “improved” each other’s creations.

The feature is called “Paint with Friends” and is a local multiplayer feature that supports 2 players. We initially intended to make it a 4 player feature – but then realized that we don’t have that many dev-kits. :) (those things are pretty expensive.) And really, it’s a pretty small screen to fit 4 people onto anyway.

I’m really excited about the collaborative painting feature, partly because I don’t really know what people are going to use it for. Playing checkers? Sending secret messages back and forth? Teaching each other how to paint? You tell me.

Or better yet, you’ll be able to show me, once Colors! 3D has been released. We just implemented collaborative painting playback in the gallery, so here you go. The first real collaborative painting in Colors! 3D.

(Click the image to visit the gallery and see the playback)

Colors! 3D won’t get an exact release date yet until it has passed Nintendo submission. It will be $6.99 in the US eShop and something similar in the European one.

  1. How fun! I’m sure most people won’t mind that the collaborative painting was changed to two players. Most collaborative paintings I’ve seen usually only have two people on at the same time anyways.

  2. This Collaborative Painting thing is awesome. I bet this is a good reason to buy a 3DS to my girlfriend!
We both love to draw and paint. She’s very good with pastels, while I’m better at digital painting. Our styles are pretty different, so I wonder what will come out while playing Colors!3D two-players. :D

  3. 2-5 weeks!!!??…i was waitin for it since december!!…but i guess patience and waiting is still worth such an awesome app..and drawing in 3d is something nowhere else available..

  5. @Hugo, Wi-Fi Connection is not a term they use on the 3DS as far as I know. But if you meant to ask if you will be able to paint with friends over the Internet, then the answer is no. Paint with Friends uses Nintendo 3DS Local Play, which is a local only feature.

  6. I’m really excited about the collaboration feature, though I wish this feature could be used with online friends, as well!

  7. Unquestionably believe that which you stated.
Your favorite justification appeared to be on the web the easiest thing to be aware of.

I say to you, I certainly get irked while people think about worries that they just
do not know about. You managed to hit the nail upon the top as well as defined out the
whole thing without having side-effects , people can take a signal.

Will likely be back to get more. Thanks
